Ultimate Frisbee Tournament rules (Modified UPA Rules)
5 on 5 Ultimate Frisbee Tournament
September 19, 2009
Our Field Rules (Modified UPA Rules)
1. Modest attire must be worn. All players must be wearing sneakers or sandals with a
back strap. No metal cleats will be allowed. It is suggest to all wear shirts of the same
color and bring an alternate color team shirt.
2. If a team is not present at the appointed time for a game (as determined by the field
judge), the team forfeits that game. If members of a team is missing, the team can choose
to play the first half undermanned.
3. A coin toss will be done at the beginning of each game. The winner of the toss will
have the choice between first possession or choice of end zone (these will reverse at the
start of the second half). End zones will switch with each goal.
4. Teams -- For this tournament, there will be 5 men/women playing on the field at one
time (not 7). You are allowed to have 6 members on your team. Substitutions may only
be made during a timeout, after a score, at halftime or after an injury.
5. Length of game -- The game will have two 12 minute halves with a 5 minute halftime.
The clock will run non-stop. (It will not stop after each score). Each team is allowed one
1 minute timeout per half. If an injury occurs, the referees will call an injury time-out and
no timeout will be accessed to either team. If the score has a 2 goal or less difference
with 2 minutes left in the game, the clock will stop after each score and resume with the
kick-off.
6. Initiate Play -- Each throw off begins with the throwing team lining up behind the
front of their respective endzone line and the receiving team with each player having 1
foot on their respective goal line. The defense throws ("pulls") the disc to the offense
from behind their goal line. If the throw is out of bounds, the receiving team can 1) request a
re-throw 2) play it from the point it went out-of-bounds 3) call 'Middle' and play it in the middle of the field at the distance it went out-of-bounds 4) call 'brick' and play it from the brick line at the middle of the field. If the receiving team player drops
the disc from the throw off, the team which threw the Frisbee gains possession at the
point. If the Frisbee falls untouched to the ground, the receiving team puts the Frisbee
into play where the Frisbee stops or is stopped.
7. Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a
pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc.
8. Thrower -- The thrower is the offensive player with possession of the disc. Once a
turnover occurs, the first offensive player to touch the disc must put the disc into play.
The thrower must establish a pivot foot and cannot change or move that foot until the
throw is released. The person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds to throw the disc.
The defensive player can keep count of the 10 seconds. If the disc is not thrown in
10 seconds, it changes possession to the other team.
9. Defense -- Only 1 person (called the marker) may guard the thrower at any one time.
The marker may not straddle (i.e. place their foot on either side of) the pivot foot of the
thrower. There must be at least 1 discs length between the upper bodies of the thrower and marker. The marker cannot put the hands in a manner to restrict the thrower from
pivoting. No other player is allowed within 3 meters of the thrower unless another
offensive player is in that area.
10. Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are
also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
11. Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul
disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. The referee will
have final authority on what is a foul.
12. Out-of bounds -- The disc is out-of-bounds anytime it touches the ground out-ofbounds.
It may go outside the lines during a throw as long as it does not touch the ground.
A defensive player may go out of bounds to make a play. For a receiver to be considered
in-bounds, the first point of contact with the ground must be completely in-bounds. If
momentum carries them out-of-bounds, the player goes to the point where they went out
of-of-bounds and puts it into play from there.
13. Endzone -- If a team gains possession in the endzone they are defending, they can
either put it into play from that spot OR carry it to the closest point on the goal line and
put it into play there. To fake or pause after gaining possession commits the player to
play to from that point. If a team gains possession in an endzone they are attacking, the
player carries it to the closest point on the goal line and plays it from that point.
14. Scoring -- A goal is scored when an offensive player catches a pass in the endzone
they are attacking. To be a goal, the first point of contact with the ground needs to be
completely in the endzone. A player cannot score by running into the endzone. If their
momentum carries them into the endzone, the receiver must carry the disc back to the
closest point on the goal line and play it from there.
15. Turnover -- When a turnover occurs, the defense immediately takes possession of
the disc and becomes the offense. A turnover occurs when an incomplete, intercepted,
knocked down or out-of-bounds pass occurs. It also happens when the thrower fails to
throw the disc in 10 seconds, the disc is handed to another player, the thrower catches
their own pass not touched by another player or the thrower intentionally deflects a pass
to themselves of another player.
16. Traveling -- The thrower must keep all or part of the pivot foot in contact with a
single spot on the field. Should the thrower lose contact with that spot, the thrower has
traveled. If the receiver obviously takes more steps than are required to stop after
catching a pass, that player has traveled. If a receiver, after receiving a pass on the run,
releases a pass after the third ground contact and before coming to a complete stop, that
receiver has traveled.
17. Stripping -- No defensive player may touch the disc while it is in possession of the
thrower or receiver. If a defensive player does so, the player in possession calls "Strip."
The player in possession then picks up the disc and play continues from the point where
s/he regained possession.
18. Frisbee -- 175 gram frisbees will be provided by the referee at the start of each game.
19. Field -- Field dimensions will be 80' wide by 240' long
